Reducing Our Impact On The Earth

How can we make the biggest difference in reducing our impact on the natural world - and still enjoy ourselves?

(Rob 14 Dec 04-)

  1. Stop shopping - if this is a major "pleasure" to people then we have a pitfall - Earthwise Entertainments (plc) anybody?
  2. Stop throwing resources away - composting is the only way to process solid wastes at home (as far as I can think), so must be encouraged
  3. Stop burning fossil fuels - solar, change energy provider, insulate, ride a bike, never go near a plane
  4. Stop having so many children - not always a vote winner this one
  5. Offset impacts - encourage wildlife, create carbon sinks, can't think of any more
  6. Most important of all - subvert the dominant paradigm by demonstrating to people how negative environmental effects can and will impinge upon their quality of life and their children's quality of life. Selfish environmentalism. Education.
I seem to have left out answers to the "and still enjoy ourselves" bit, but I attempted a suggestion in 1. Composting is immensely pleasurable to anyone who can come to realise its significance in ecological cycling, cycling is immensely more pleasurable than driving otherwise people wouldn't risk their necks to do it. Number 4 is tough. Planting trees and nature gardens can be a joy to many if they can see how it will be a really useful thing to do. (-Rob)
